Law of the Wild - More Character concepts!

 Hey Everyone!

Since my last post announcing the new comic project that I'm working on (click here if you missed it!) I've been sharing some more sneak peeks of pencils and inks on social media, so I thought it was high time I introduced you all to a couple more of the characters who have featured in them!

The first character I'm going to share concepts of today was actually the first character I drew! Though he doesn't play a big part in the story, mixing an aquatic animal with a cast of land mammals was always going to be a design challenge. How I decided to draw this guy would ultimately influence the design of the rest of the cast! I mean, do I draw a human shaped bodies with animal heads and tails? Or do I draw and animal shaped bodies that stand on two legs, wear clothes and talk?

If you're familiar with my previous work on MULP: Sceptre of the Sun, then you'll know that I favour the latter of those two styles... So when then script called for a Great White Shark character, I wondered if it'd be possible to draw him as a real Shark would look, but on land and wearing a suit!

As ridiculous as that sounds, I'm pretty happy with the outcome!
So without further a-do, let me introduce to you our King of Crime, the Mob Boss, Godfather, Kingpin and cruel Loan Shark.. Bruce!

Bruce's design was inspired by and mixture of Marvel Comic's Wilson Fisk (Kingpin) and the character from Shark Tale that Robert De Niro voices (Don Edward Lino), with a good dose of Bruce the Shark from Finding Nemo.
Because our Bruce operates on land, I needed to make a Shark's survival out of water plausible if he was going to look like an actual Shark! The collar around Bruce's neck was inspired by the breathing apparatus that Abe Sapien wears in Guillermo Del Toro's Hellboy adaptation, allowing the amphibious Abe to walk on land for extended periods. The idea behind Bruce's collar is that water flows through the tubes from a tank on his back, over his gills, allowing him to breathe on land. I also saw him getting about in a huge motorised wheelchair (Professor X style) flanked by lackies and henchmen to do his dirty work for him, however this detail doesn't appear in the comic.

The final player in our cast of miscreants is Bunky the Chimpanzee.
Bunky is Sebastian's faithful flunkey. He's a cheeky chappy, streetwise and quite rough around the edges, but with a good heart for a petty criminal!

Inspiration for Bunky's design came partially from DC's Detective Chimp character but mostly I heavily relied on real life reference photos of Chimpanzees, those guys have enough charisma that practically draws themselves!

As I mentioned before, I've been sharing sneak peeks at the progress of this comic over on my various social media outlets!
Here's a little look at these characters on the page.

Sector 13; the 2000AD Fanzine - Law of the Wild!

Hey Everyone!

In my last post I hinted at some comics work I've been quietly working away on, so let me take the time to give you lot a bit of background on what this project is all about!

During the first Lockdown last year I was approached by Peter Duncan about contributing some material to an extra special edition of his all ages anthology SPLANK! It was Peter's intention to showcase the wealth of British comics talent with a special bumper issue of his comic during the time when COVID 19 meant comic conventions and fairs had to be cancelled, as well as collect donations for NHS charities to help those who needed it most during this difficult time.
I took Peter up on his kind offer and used it as an opportunity to revive my own anthropomorphic, autobio comic strip; Paws for Thawt!

The free digital download for SPLANK went live on May 28th 2020. If you missed the launch post you can read more about it here!
I can also happily say that since this issue of SPLANK! my Paws for Thawt webcomic has kept going strong! I'm continuing to post weekly updates on the Paws for Thawt Tumblr and Instagram pages so give them a like and a follow to stay up to date!

Anyway, you're probably wondering what all this has to do with this latest project and Sector 13!?
Well, after my involvement with SPLANK! Peter introduced me to the 2000AD Fanzine he is Editor for and presented me with the script for a short anthropomorphic he thought would be a perfect for for my illustration style!

Sector 13 itself is a strictly non-profit 2000AD tribute comic founded by the Belfast-based fan group of the same name. What started as a compilation of articles and photo stories featuring the groups cosplayers, has turned into a high quality A4 sized publication teeming with talent from the British indie comic's scene! You can read more about Sector 13's story and get hold of previous issues over on Peter's website: BOX OF RAIN
Or check out the Sector 13 Facebook page for regular updates and news!

The story that I'll be working on for this next issue is called "Law of the Wild" written by the fantastic Ed Whiting!

Ed has written stories for Sector 13's pages previously, making his debut with his 50's throwback Futureshock story "Lethal Weapons" April this year! Ed has also produced his own self published comic "Bigger Fish", a 44 page gritty crime story set in the New York of the early seventies. Bigger Fish is available from Get My Comics (follow the indie tab and then look under B for £5.99) https://getmycomics.com/Release/Indie

"Law of the Wild" is a quirky anthropomorphic, sci-fi based, hard boiled detective story! It combines sci-fi body swapping ideas with the seedy criminal underbelly of a noir detective story, all told with quirky anthropomorphic characters! It's so much fun!! Here, to wet your appetites for what's to come, I'll share some character sketches for two of our main characters! Colt Winchester is this story's super cop! A gruff, no-nonsense detective who's not afraid to get his hooves dirty in the fight against crime! He's a horse by the way!

Inspiration for Colt came from a combination of Bojack Horseman and one of my favourite anthro comics of all time; Blacksad by Juan Díaz Canales (writer) and Juanjo Guarnido (artist). Seriously if you haven't heard of it check it out! It's incredible!

Next up we have this villainous venomous viper; Sebastian Ssstan! Sebastian is our story's criminal mastermind, highly intelligent and superior, he might get away with his heinous criminal operation if it weren't for Colt's meddling!
Sebastian was mostly inspired by the Disney characters; Sir Hiss (Robin Hood) and Kaa (Jungle Book) with a nice dash of the stereotypical Supervillain aesthetic.

If you liked to look of these guys, then keep your eyes peeled for the reveal of more character concepts soon!

Don't forget to give the Sector 13 Facebook page a like in order to keep up to date with upcoming news and sneak peeks for this story and the rest of the issue's content, as well as any snippets I might share on my own social media!

PAWS for THAWT is officially BACK!

WELCOME BACK!
Shortly after Lockdown started I set myself the challenge of getting as far through the Insanity Workout as I could...

And today I completed it!!

In light of that I thought I’d share this strip to kick off the revival of Paws for Thawt! Insanity is 63 days of tough workouts, some days it was really difficult to find the motivation to power through. However by taking it one step at a time, rather than getting overwhelmed, you can accomplish anything! The same can be applied to a lot of other things which are going on right now... Stay safe everyone!

PAWS for THAWT is BACK!

Hey there Everyone!

Yes, that's right!
My little webcomic will be returning to it's weekly Tuesday post as of tomorrow, 2nd June!

For those of you who missed my previous blog post announcing this news (or had trouble reading it because of the technical difficulties and squiffy orientation! Thanks for your patience with that btw!) let me re-cap briefly.

While the country has been on Lockdown I've been keeping myself sane by picking up where I'd left off with Paws for Thawt! I had to put this weekly web comic on hiatus as I couldn't maintain regular updates alongside working on the final issue of MULP: Sceptre of the Sun, I had to prioritise MULP. Despite a short break turning into radio silence for a long period, I was still noting down funny moments and ideas for strips with the intention of picking Paws for Thawt up again when I had the time and motivation.
Well, isn't Lockdown the perfect opportunity to find that time and motivation for a project such as this!? And with the help of Peter Duncan and his SPLANK! 2020 Annual I've been able to get Paws for Thawt back off the ground!

The special digital edition of the SPLANK! Annual 2020 launched on Thursday 28th May!

SPLANK! 2020: Free digital Download

Hey there everyone!
I've some exciting news to share with you all..

A few weeks ago I was approached by Peter Duncan, Editor of the 2000AD fanzine SECTOR 13 and all round top gent, to contribute some material towards his special digital edition of the SPLANK! Annual!

Cover art by John Farrelly
SPLANK! originally a 44 page collection of comics celebrating 60's power comics and British humour strips, has been revived during this time of Covid 19 Lockdown where Comic Conventions and Fairs have been cancelled and a good proportion of indie comic's creator's income has been lost along with it.
It is Peter's intention, with this all digital edition of SPLANK! to showcase and promote the creators of the British indie comics scene!

In this all ages, bumper edition of the anthology you will find over 160 pages of awesome comics from a whole host of fantastic creators! Along with handy adverts and links so you can easily find more of your favourite creator's work online!

So what are you waiting for!? Go ahead and download your free copy right here!

Box of Rain Magazine website - Scroll down to "Download Links".
Get My Comics website - Scroll down to SPLANK! and click the image.

As this PDF is full to the brim of amazing content, please allow a little while for the download to complete. If you would rather just have a flick through before deciding whether to download the full file, then you can read it online for a limited time!

As well as an attempt to showcase and promote the wealth of talent who have contributed to this annual, Peter has also instilled a very strong message of support for the tireless efforts and astounding work of the NHS and other Key Workers during this difficult time.
On top of this Peter has set up a Just Giving page in support of NHS Charities whose staff and volunteers are caring for patients with Covid 19.

Numerous creators, who's work feature in this issue, participated in showing their appreciation for our Key Workers by contributing artwork to the cause.
If you would like to make a contribution to this very worth while cause then you can do so with this link!

So in light of all this awesome news, you're probably wondering where I come in exactly?
Well over these past 70+ days of Lockdown I have been busy scribbling away and preparing a revival of my own...

YES! I'm really pleased to announce that PAWS FOR THAWT is BACK!!!
And is featured in this issue of SPLANK!!

Paws for Thawt was the anthropomorphic semi-autobiographical webcomic, where I cast myself, friends and family as animals, in a series of one page strips re-counting funny moments and relatable experiences I'd encountered.
Unfortunately that hiatus was longer than I ever intended due to a variety of different reasons. Despite not actually putting pencil to paper during this break, I was always noting down funny moments ever with the intention of picking Paws for Thawt up again!
I started posting one strip every week back in in June 2017 (feels like an age ago!) and for a while maintained regular posting of a strip a week alongside illustrating issues 4 and 5 of MULP, as well as working part-time. But in April 2018 I had to put Paws for Thawt on a hiatus and make work on MULP my priority while I finished the final issue.

After being put on Furlough from my part-time job, I made a decision to make the most of this time and pick up where I left off!
So when Peter asked me to contribute some material to SPLANK! I leapt at the opportunity to not only support his great effort in promoting indie comic creators and show my appreciation for the NHS and Keyworkers' efforts during this time, but to also aid in the re-launch of my lil comic!!

Paws for Thawt will be live again as of the 2nd June, and will be posting regularly again every Tuesday for as long as I can keep churning out strips! But in the mean time, check out SPLANK! to see the featured strips, two of which are completely new!

Countdown to Troobs 2020 - OPEN FOR COMMISSIONS!

Hey there comic fans,

The new year has begun, convention season is fast approaching, and I've been busy doodling up a storm in preparation for my first con appearance of the year!

If anyone has been following my Instagram or Twitter feeds you may have spotted that I'd been posting up a lot of ink drawings recently. I've been experimenting with a new style for drawing people...
Yes! Actual human people!

Since I'd spent the last 5 years or so working on MULP: Sceptre of the Sun, drawing anthropomorphic characters, I'd basically been practising drawing people again and it's resulted in this flow of productivity!

So I've decided to polish up these pics and prep them for sale at OK True Believers in February!
Over the next couple of weeks I will be posting up examples of the original sketches that will be avaliable at the convention.

I will also be taking commissions!!
So if you like the look of these sketches, but wished that I'd drawn your favourite character in Film, TV, Comics or Games then you can commission me and pick them up from my table at the convention! Or if you can't make it on the day but would really like a sketch, I can post it out to you after the con.

A5 colour sketches start at £10 (1 character, no background)
A4 colour sketches start at £20 (1 character, no background)
+ £5 for each additional characters/background detail. +£2 postage if required.
Please enquire for more info!

So without further a-do, I'll start you off with a series of A5 coloured sketches depicting the many faces of Eleven from Stranger Things!

You can commission an A5 single character sketch, such as these, for the special pre-con price of £10 each! These originals will also be available for sale at OK True Believers, in Cheltenham on Saturday 1st Feb.

If you wanna check out more examples of what I'll be bringing to the convention take a look through the links below (will be updated as more are revealed)

Tickets are on sale now!! If you've not grabbed yours then head over to http://oktruebelievers.com/
and get your advance tickets for £8 (or £10 on the door).

Stay tuned as I reveal more artwork that will be avaliable at Troobs!

The MULP Finale: Issue 5 OUT NOW!

Ahoy Adventurers!
I hinted in my previous blog post that some special news was brewing for MULP, and so it has! Thats right, MULP: Sceptre of the Sun issue #5 is finally finished and avaliable for all you to buy and read!

I'm hoping that with this post I can collect every scrap of news together to make this your one stop shop for all things concerning the finale of our epic mousey adventure!

Back in October, in the run up to Nottingham Comic Con which took place on Saturday 19th, we revealed the cover for our final issue!
It was touch and go whether we would have the fifth issue ready or not for the convention so we kinda kept progress under wraps till it was confirmed.
And a tight call it was too! I took a trip to our excellent Bristol based printers in the week preceding the convention to look over and colour check the proofs, an insightful look into the litho process that makes the final step in creating our comic! Giving the thumbs up on printing the run, we collected a box of Issue #5 hot off the press on our way up to Nottingham the day before the convention!

Breathing a slight sigh of relief we set ourselves up at Nottingham Comic Con with the complete MULP saga!
We had an absolute blast! I've always enjoyed Nottingham Comic Con and it was fantastic to the back. MULP was set up on table U35, in good company right next to the NoBrow tables and ACP's (Awesome Comics Podcast) Tony Esmond, with whom we shared many a chuckle.
Yours truly also appeared on a panel that day! Hosted by another of the ACP'ers Vince Hunt (they get everywhere!) Top gents Nick Prolix, Neil Slorence and I answered questions from Vince about doing comics yourself. That canny Vincenzo recorded us all chatting about the comic's making process and the versatility that the current age allows to get your work out there. You can hear the panel in full, along with interviews from other creators on the convention floor, recordings from other panels on the day and the lads thoughts on the convention as a whole on Episode 224 of their podcast. Click the picture below to check it out!

Nottingham Comic Con overall was, as before, fantastic! It is always so lovely to see such a family friendly comic's focussed event. There were loads of kids who came by to start or to continue their collection of our books, as well as plenty of adults who did the same. Massive thank yous to everyone who stopped by, whether you were starting your adventure with issue #1 or had been a long term follower of our story looking to read the next chapter.
Huge thanks also to organisers Kev and Kel Brett for making us welcome and putting together such an awesome convention, I hope we can make it again next year!

On a slight side note, muggins here also appeared on The Nerds Who Haunted Themselves' podcast. Have a listen to me chat to that fab Stuart Mulrain about my personal comics origin story, the process for creating MULP and thoughts on the anthropomorphic comics genre on his "Why Comics?" segment!
Click the picture above to have a listen!

As we enter November the Thought Bubble hype has started!
Last week marked the reveal of the excellent pin-up art for our final issue by the lovely Steve Sims of Beast Hunting Battle Badgers fame.
I was psyched to have fellow anthropomorphic comic creator working on this for us and am totally thrilled with his rendition of our characters.
Check out more of Steve's work and Battle Badgers here: www.battlebadgers.co.uk

MULP #5 has also seen it's first couple of reviews!

The mighty Geek Syndicate's Barry Nugent was first to share his thoughts on the final issue of our story;

"Matt’s writing may bring the story to life but it’s Sara’s art that makes it fly. Her art throughout the series and in this issue is sublime. Not a drop of ink is wasted or a panel rushed. Every expression the mice exhibit is painstakingly recreated within every panel."

Thank you very much Barry for your kind words! Find the full review HERE

Long term supporter of our rodent escapades and all round lovely chap, Jeremy Briggs also chipped in his thoughts on the conclusion to our story;

"Sara’s artwork has become progressively more cinematic over the five issues but for me it is the facial close-ups that are the standout as her art conveys the emotions of our furry little heroes and villains making these anthropomorphic animals all the more human."

Once again thank you for all your support and encouragement throughout the series Jeremy! Read the full review HERE

This round up almost brings us up to date with some final bits of exciting news remaining...

Photo courtesy of our friends as Page 45!

Today is new comic book day, and you can now add MULP: Sceptre of the Sun issue #5 to your pull list!
Yes! The final issue of MULP is available at all our supporting UK comic shops, so if you missed us at Nottingham Comic Con or if you're not able to catch us as at conventions, you don't have to miss out!
Check out the list of shops where you can get your paws on the final issue: https://mulpcomic.com/wheretobuy

However, if you happen to be heading to Harrowgate this weekend for Thought Bubble then come on over to the ComiXology Originals Hall and find all 5 issues of MULP: Sceptre of the Sun with Improper Books at tables 155-156.

I'll be there both days, signing and sketching along with the rest of the Improper Books clan. Looking forward to seeing you all there!
