A very Merry Christmas to you all!

Afternoon Whovians!

Hope you've all had a wonderful Christmas!
I'm currently blogging to you from my family home in Somerset, still with a bellyful of fantastic food!

So while letting my turkey sarnies from lunch go down I'm going to get stuck into finishing the colours for page 19 of Doctor Who: The Impossible Crossing!
Only 3 pages to colour while I'm here in the homelands, and then full issue is on target to be released early in the New Year!

For now though here is a look at the colours for a panel depicting the wonderful 8th Doctor, as previously seen in the pencilled and inked stages.

Wishing you all the very best for 2013! :D

"I'm not really meant to be down here, see?"

Morning Who fans!

This week I'll update you with the final colours for a rather small panel that I'm quite fond of.

Panel 3, page 13 (as seen during the inked and penciled stage here) may not look all the special on it's own but I'm a huge fan of Harriet, and I feel this panel especially caught her sheepish charm when she's found out of bounds in the Cargo Bay.

Hopefully when you all come to read the 1st issue, you'll all love Harriet as much as I do!

The Grand Staircase - Doctor Who: Impossible Crossing

Progress with colouring Impossible Crossing issue 1 is coming along nicely! I just yesterday finished page 14, and today am currently working on page 15!
Once completed that'll leave only 7 pages left to colour!

So who wants to get a peek at some of these coloured panels then?

As I've shown you the pencils and the inks for possibly one of my favourite panels in the comic, I'll show you the colours for it too!

I give you the Grand Staircase on board Titanic!

Doctor Who: Impossible Crossing colour progress!!

Hey there Whovians!

The colours for Impossible Crossing are steaming along nicely, I'm already over half way with only 10 pages left to colour!
Last week I managed to colour 3 pages in 2 days, and today I seem to be matching that pace having already finished colouring page 12 and making headway on page 13!

So I thought it was high time I shared some colours with you all, here is panel 1 from page 6 (as seen during the pencil and inked stage here) in all it's technicolour glory!

On Deck - Impossible Crossing peek.

Hey Who fans!!

I'm well underway with colouring! As it stands I've currently just finished colouring page 10, and I'm well on my way to starting page 11 once I've finished this blog!

For now though here is a panel from page 21 that I'm rather proud of! The Doctor and Harriet looking over the bow of the Titanic.

Mooooooore Zombie portraits!!

Been a busy zom-bee (gettit?) with with all these commissions! Haha never mind! :P

Here are the latest additions to the horde!
Ash and Lyndsay here are my Manager and supervisor at work... lets just say drawing these two was a daunting experience, but also at the same time fun in a slightly sadistic way! Love you guys! :D
Ben here is a has been turned into a comic fiend and Walking Dead fan with my encouragement. Now I've also turned him into a Zombie!
Here're another couple! Andrea and her boyfriend Harry, who I am told is one lighting scar away from being Harry Potter... well Harry, wish granted!

This one was a fun commission for Venetia and her band called The What Now Kids? Jon, the singer has his lower jaw missing and his mic wrapped round his neck. Venetia has her head partially severed by a cymbal and a drumstick in her mouth. And Rob has an axe wound caused by his guitar!

More Zombie Portraits!!

The trial run for this proposed Zombie Portrait commission is going really well! Thanks for the great support everyone!

I've had a few takers since I blogged previously (click here to see the earlier portraits) and spent last night disfiguring and dismembering a couple of my best friends! Haha!

Zombie Ian, our resident undead vegetarian!
Fellow illustrator Jennie Gyllblad and her undead budgies Chester and Ruffles.

John here is a cycling fanatic! Nice to know that his helmet survived the zombie apocalypse, even if he didn’t… Road safety first everyone!!

There are a few more to come so I'll post them up in another batch!
This was a good idea to open as a trial first to work out the kinks and become aware of things before they become a crisis! I think I will defiantly open this up as a properly organised commission next year for anyone and everyone, people just seem to love Zombies!!

Halloween Special - Zombie Portraits!!

Halloween is a-coming!!

I've currently been reading a LOT of Walking Dead and felt really inspired to get into the spooky spirit with a Zombified self portrait for display pictures and things.
But then once I did one for myself (and thoroughly freaked myself out in the process) I had to do one for my sister, Gemma, her boyfriend Josh, and Alex!

It's gotten to the point where other people are now interested! So I might open a bit of a commission with this!

If you'd like to see yourself Zombified like the portraits below, then get in touch!

Solo portraits (like these pictured here) - £8
Double portrait (you and a friend) - £10

Portraits are drawn in blue and lead pencil with red colouring pencil, they measure around 11cm by 11cm, (double portraits will be wider) and all are signed and dated.

This commission offer will only be open during the lead up to Halloween and for time and postage purposes I can only offer this to friends and family for now, sorry!
If this kicks off then maybe next year I'll open it up to a broader market!

Doctor Who: The Impossible Crossing UPDATE!

Morning Whovians!
I have some very exciting news for you!
Last week marked the completion of all the pencils and inks for all pages of the first issue! And this week I completed all the lettering also!

So from now until Christmas I will be busy colouring everything ready for a lunch in the New Year, and a kick start of a year long celebration of 50 years of Doctor Who!
For now though, I'm going to share a rather special panel from page 20.

What's so special about this panel, you're wondering right? Well it's based on a rather famous photograph taken by Frank Browne on Titanic's Promenade deck. First-class passenger Frederick Spedden observes his son, Robert Douglas, spinning a top while other passengers look on. And strolling right through the background of this scene is the Doctor and Harriet!
Here's the actual photograph:

This is just one of the many little hints and nods to real life events that Alex and I have added into Impossible Crossing!

In related news Alex and I were interviewed by Geek Syndicate's Luke Halsall for their Autumn of Indie! Read about how we got into comics and Doctor Who, and learn more about the research we had to do to capture Titanic and the Doctors!

"Well, shall we?" - Impossible Crossing Sneak Peek!

Hey there Whovians!

This week saw Page 20 drawn and inked, which means that there are only 2 more pages to go!!

This'll be the longest comic I've done to date, and I'm probably as excited as you lot to see it all finally put together! And this is only issue one!!
Alex Beedie (the writer) and I are still in discussion as to wether to get a black and white version out to you early, or to wait for the whole issue to be coloured...

I for one know I'm impatient for our story to be read! However a full colour first issue could be ready for the Doctor Who Christmas Special!
How d'you all feel about that? :)

To help you decide here's a sneaky peek of Page 15, Panel 2!

I've also ventured out into the realm of Tumblr!!

If you're also on Tumblr, and would like to keep track of my work and other bits and pieces, then please give my Tumblog a look, like and follow: http://saradunkerton.tumblr.com

Doctor Who: The Impossible Crossing - Sneak Peek

Morning all!

To update you all on the progress of the first full issue of Doctor Who: The Impossible Crossing, today I'll be working on the pencils and inks for page 19!
Which'll leave only 3 pages (and the cover) left to draw before lettering!!

Alex Beedie (the writer) and I are in discussion as to wether we should push the release forward, but in doing so majority of the issue will be in black and white. As it stands at the moment only the 1st 5 pages we released in April as the Prologue are in colour, however the option is always there to go back and colour the rest of the issue at a later date.

We're just very eager to tell our story! And I hope from these sneak peeks you're all as eager to read it!

Here's another snippet to look at from page 13, panel 3.

Cut Capers Commission - Finished Illustration

The other week I finished the final stage for the CD cover I'd been commissioned to illustrate for Cut Capers!

I've have previously been posting up progress from each stage of the illustration, from the initial developed rough concepts, to the final pencil outline and pencil rendering.
To finalise the illustration I've enhanced the pencil rendering slightly using photoshop, adding sharp highlights and defined shadows. I also added a misty morning halo around the lamp post and of course the rain.

All that remains now is to add the title of the EP and the name of the band; Pinstripe Tux by Cut Capers!

Remember if you'd like to check out the track that this illustration is for, plus a few more original songs by Cut Capers check out the links below!

Dark Harvest : Resistance PUBLISHED!!

Something very special arrived in the post Friday morning. Apologies for not being able to show you all until now, but here it is!!!
Dark Harvest: the Legacy of Frankenstein - Resistance, all printed, published and pretty! :D

Right at the beginning of this book the Resistance comic I illustrated kicks off an introduction into the themes and tone of Dark Harvest, to refresh those returning to the RPG after the 1st book, and enlighten any newcomers.
Following the comic you'll encounter various single illustrations, four of which are mine, nestled amongst the text. Thats something I really like about this book, the page layouts are very well thought through and each page treats the eye with something. Be it an old paper scroll inset, annotations to the illustrations, or the subheadings in a different font to break up the text.

Then towards the end of the book the winning characters of the Create a Character competition are presented alongside the pencil illustrations I provided.

To be able to finally hold so many months worth of hard work and anticipation in my hands is astounding! I am so overwhelmed by how well the whole book has come together, it's such a joy to be able to flick through and not only encounter my own work, but that of others also, and see how each complements the subject and aesthetic of each page!
I'm so chuffed, not only am I now a thrice published illustrator, with this wonderful book to add to my portfolio, but I've also learnt many valuable skills and made firm friends on the way.
Iain, I'm very much looking forward to the next time we work together! :D

To top off this post I've another glowing review to share with you!

Shores of Night - Dark Harvest: Legacy of Frankenstein and the Resistance

This double review of the Dark Harvest core book and Resistance, the shiny beauty you see piccies of above, is by Steve Cotterill.

Here is what he had to say specifically about the comic:

"Turning to the Resistance, which starts with a lovely comic strip, so much kudos to Iain's team for getting that in place, we find a much deeper insight into those who defy the new order"

Doctor Who: The Impossible Crossing - sneak peek!

Hey there Whovians!

It's time you had another sneaky peek at issue one of The Impossible Crossing and I've got a special panel to show you today, it's possibly my favourite panel out of the entire issue!
It was SO fun to draw, when you see it you'll defiantly see why!

So without further ado here is Harriet awed by the Ship of Dreams in Panel 1 of Page 8!

Have you been keeping track of all the behind the scenes character sketches and peeks at panels from issue one? No worries, you can see 'em all right here! And don't forget to check out the 1st 5 pages of issue one in the Prologue, even if you've seen it already read it again!
On a related topic, I've a bit of news! Alex Beedie, the writer of the Impossible Crossing has started a Film Review blog! There you'll not only be able to read weekly reviews on a variety of film and TV genres, but you will also find links to where you can read more of his written work online! So if you enjoyed Doctor Who: The Impossible Crossing Prologue, then give this a read and a follow on awordonfilm.blogspot.co.uk

Cut Capers Commission - progress

In the last post I showed you some roughs for a CD cover commission I'm doing for Bristol band, Cut Capers!
Things have progressed nicely since then, and I thought I'd share a couple things with you.

Below is the pencilled outline and then the illustration shaded with pencil tones.

The next step is to take this pencil shaded illustration into photoshop and enhance the rendering,  add highlights, the rain and early morning mists. Then finally I'll add in the all important text!

Remember, if you want to check out Cut Caper's music and info, you can do so here:

Cut Capers CD cover Commission

The other week I was contacted by the lovely Nick Van Tinteren, guitarist for the Bristol Hip Hop/Ska band; Cut Capers, with a request to do an illustration for the cover of their Single Pinstripe Tux!

He had seen one of my Illustrations for Dark Harvest (which you can see in this post) and wanted a similar feel for the cover of their Single.

I happily obliged and below is a developed rough pencil sketch of the final composition.

I also went ahead and quickly mocked up some text for the cover. The font, position and style will be discussed and refined for the final illustration.
If you want to listen to the track that this commission is illustrating, or if you want to learn a bit more about the band then check out their links!Facebook: www.facebook.com/CutCapersTwitter: www.twitter.com/cutcapersSoundcloud: www.soundcloud.com/cutcapersMyspace: www.myspace.com/cutcapers

My work on display at the Canada Place Trail Exhibit, Vancouver!!

Back in February I had a surprise email regarding a couple of Illustrations from my 3rd year at the University of the West of England, Bristol.
Someone wanted to purchase the right to use these two illustrations in an outdoor educational display in Vancouver, Canada!

The Illustrations in question were these shown below:

This one depicts John Cabot landing on the beach of Newfoundland, having set sail in the Matthew from Bristol.

And this one depicts a tribe of Native Americans viewing the previous scene from the surrounding mountains.
These Illustrations were originally conceptual pieces for and idea I had for a werewolf comic set in the 1700's, when the British came to colonise America. You can find the original posts for these images on my blog here and here.
I spent my 3rd year at uni developing the story and aesthetic for this comic, but have since had to put it's production on hold with the intent of picking it up in the future... However you can view all the work I did towards it right here.

Right now the Canadian Trail exhibit is open free to the public and has received a lot of interest from tourists to Vancouver!
I am told that there are up to 3 cruise ship sailings a week, transporting approx 5-6,000 people, not including the other visitors walking through the exhibit, so it's anticipated to draw plenty of attention!

On the outdoor promenade there are benches highlighting different topics of Canada. These benches have graphic panels that tells the story relating to that topic. My Illustrations are on a graphic panel for
their history station! The display itself is scheduled to remain up and open to the public for 3-5 years!!!

And here is what you can expect to see!!

My contact and the Canada Place corporation was kind enough to take a few photos of my work in the display and of the Exhibit as a whole!

So if you find yourself heading out towards Vancouver, or if I have any Canadian readers out there, then pop along to Canada Place and take a look! You can find out more about the exhibit and other things on this website: http://www.canadaplace.ca/If you do go, I'd love to hear all about it so please feel free to comment below!! :)

Dark Harvest: Resistance - Reviews, Interviews and more!!!

Welcome Prometheans to this HUMUNGOUS review post!!The Dark Harvest: Legacy of Frankenstein supplement; Resistance, has been out and available to buy (as PDF) for a good few weeks now. The reviews and interviews have been pouring in, so I've taken the liberty of collecting every scrap of info I can find for an uber-list of links for you all to peruse at your own leisure!I shall be adding to this list  and updating it with a few more review links and things that are on their way!
1. We'll kick things off with a review from Tommy Brownell on his blog. You can find Tommy's take on Dark Harvest: Resistance here: http://mostunreadblogever.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/tommys-take-on-dark-harvest-resistance.html
2. Review by GMS Magazine, here is a little bit about what they say about the art."The text is broken with inserts, which take the shape of parchment, and quite a few really lovely illustrations. The style of the illustrations is somewhat misleading to the atmosphere of the book, though. The style is slightly naive in its rendering. Although I have absolutely no problem with it (in fact, I really like it), you might be forgiven for believing the contents are less serious than they are."You can find the whole thing here: http://www.gmsmagazine.com/authors-2/dark-harvest-the-legacy-of-frankensteinresistance
3. The Going Last Gaming Podcast give a really nice review in their June episodeIf you want to listen to the dark Harvest bit specifically, fast forward to the last 15mins: http://goinglast.net/2012/06/session-74/

4. A really lovely and enthusiastic review from Nearly Enough Dice up next! Here's what was said about the art amongst other things.

"I love the comics, the stories and the artwork and maps that are throughout this wonderful supplement. I love the fact that there is over 160 pages of stuff I actually want to look at! I love this supplement and get a real feeling of quality from it."

5. A little while ago Iain Lowson, the creator of Dark Harvest, gave an interview to the Polish gaming website: Poltergeist, about Resistance!

The interview was published on the site in Polish, however you can find an English translation on the DH:LoF website here: http://www.darkharvest-legacyoffrankenstein.com/interviews/interview-on-poltergeist/
